In a Google Groups forum today, Jean-Baptiste M. Queru, technical lead for Google on the Android Open Source Project, announced that Android 4.1.2 has been seeded to the AOSP, and is rolling out to the Nexus 7 tablet and GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus. The point-two release of Android 4.1 “Jellybean” includes the ability to show homescreens in landscape orientation. Until now, homescreens on Jellybean devices were only able to be shown in portrait orientation.

This update and enhancement is a much-welcomed addition to the Nexus 7, as until now users have been forced to third-party applications to force landscape orientation for homescreens. Google has not released an official change log for this release yet, however, with this being an incremental release to version 4.1, don’t expect any earth-shattering new features. Android devices other than Nexus devices can be upgraded to the newest release, but will require the manufacturers and carriers to implement the new features and push the release out to device owners (translation: it’s not coming any time soon).
With an announcement of a new Nexus device, and Android 4.2, from Google right around the corner, Android 4.1.2 may be the last release for Android “Jellybean”.
